Temptation
This week we are beginning a look at Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. The story is about the main character, Odysseus’s, journey back to his homeland of Ithaca, Greece. Along the way Odysseus encounters many situations that test his skills, values, and decision making abilities.
One such encounter was with the singing Sirens, sea goddesses whose voices were so beautiful that sailors would be drawn to them and then their boats would crash against the rocks and sink. Leading to the drowning death of everyone aboard.
Knowing that he wouldn’t be able to resist the temptation of the Sirens, Odysseus plugged his ears with melted wax so he wouldn’t be able to hear the Sirens’ singing voices.
Today’s Talker: We all have encountered situations where we have had to fight the temptation to do something that we shouldn’t or didn’t want to do.
If you fell victim to the temptation, why did this happen?
Or, if you resisted it, what strategies did you use to do so?

Haha, I read the Oddyssey, in like fourth grade. I didn't really like it. I don't remember a lot except Penelope and her son were waiting for him to come home from the Trojan War, and all these guys tried to marry Penelope. Haha. I get bored really easily, and all the gods and goddesses confused me. Ugh.
So yeah, I hope we don't read the whole thing... Sorry for not answering the question, not in a very insightful mood haha.

i've alway fell for stuff out side of school. my big problem is that when i want to play soccer but there is always other choise to chose from like basketball or baseball. It all comes down to who is playing the sport like kyle keitz or david s i alway find a way out of it
see ya at school,
wexler
Carrie- don't worry we will not be reading the whole poem. We will be looking for the Greek and moral values that can be found in it. We will be reading summaries of excerpts and looking at ancient artifacts depicting scenes.
Matt, you find a way out of what? Trying to play sports all together or getting away from your friends?
in trying to say that you want to do something but some how u want to do somethind else. I thing that has to do with the epic that we read today or that this has nothing to do with this. I think that it might be some thing else to fall in temptation. i really don't know any more.
see ya at school,

Wow matt what a confusing post u made I can see why Mr. Howman was confused. Oh yes, and my response to the question, ummm I have done things to impress my friends and I fell for it just so I wouldn't be made fun of. If your thinking it had anything to do with alchohol abuse or something like that no way I would never ever do anything like that because I'm the kind of kid that sticks with the rules and you should too!!!
Thanks Kyle, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was a little confused!
Kyle, your comment definitely hits the point of why we all sometimes fall victim to a temptation. Whatever it was that you did- did you regret it after?
I've fallen for teptations. Especially when I was younger. you know when your parents would dangle that candy bar in front of your face and you would always say I'll do anythig you want mommy or daddy. And now when your older your friends will tell you that they won't be your friend if you don't do something for them, and then your like okay what do you want and then you feel like you have no choice but to do it and then you feel like kicking your self afterwards. i HATE that! Anyways... see you tomorrow in school, Mr. Howman!
not really
i've never been temped to do somthing that i didnt want to and if it was it was really miner and i didnt have to do much to resist it

if im bored i will be tempted to do stupid things here is an example: last winter, there is a stream in my back yard and there was 1 small layer of ice across it so alex c was over and he dared me to start jumping on the ice so i was bored and i did then when i was jumping on the ice it cracked and a hole formed on the ice but i jumped to safty in time so as you can see i will get tempted to do stupid things
Sorry to get back to you so late Mr. Howman, I couldn't get to my computer homework comes first in my family!!! And yes I did Regret what I did but I learned my lesson!!!
when i'm tempted to do somthing i just like dont do it its not that hard just be like " yea no thanks" and walk away.... right?
I always get tempted to sprint even during the middle of the night. Its like my passion. To keep myself from doing so I usually think about all the cool things I will dream about which tempts me to fall asleep.

It's a good thing for you, Kyle, that the water was not very deep after you jumped through the ice. What if someone told you to jump off a bridge?!
Nicole makes some great points- the temptations get more complicated and can be harder to resist as you get older. The consequences are also higher as well- a candy bar is one thing- but potentially losing a friend over a decision is another. Always do what you think is the right thing to do regardless of who is pressuring you. Stay true to yourself.
Bret, I never knew that running was such a passion of yours. That's a great activity to keep you in good shape. So, now I can add running to the list...by the way, are we going to get another karaoke performance this year?!!!
i think it depends on what it is that your tempted to do..
i mean, if i want to do somehting, then i'll do it. if i dont then i wont. no big deal or anything, its just that if i know that soemhting bad is going to happen if i do something, then i will probably just talk myself out of it.
The number one thing I get tempted into is when there is drama going on or my friends are fighting. Friends pull me into the middle weather it is on purpose or not. If they don't then I get my self in the middle. I do not like it at all.
