Current Event Talks
The second trimester has begun and along with the new trimester is the new format of current events. This week we began delivering the current events assignment in oral presentation form.
So...
* Share your experience about preparing or delivering the current event talk.
* Share your suggestions for delivering a good current event talk.
* Were you more/less nervous than you thought you would be?
* Did it go better/worse than you thought it would?
* Would you do anything different next time?
Those are just some suggestions for comments~ let's get some feedback!

Nathan wrote this comment in the current event posting and it gave me the idea to create a post for the the current event talks, so I copied and pasted Nathan's comment to this post:

i find it really hard to make eye contact during the oral presentation. i was clueless during the presentation and when my eyes went down to the paper it was hard to get them back upto everybody, i thought that would be easy but thinking just to get threw it, eye contact wasnt something i was focused on. i noticed it in the middle of the presentation.
(:!nathan!:)
Eye contact is definitely something that has to be worked on because it's not easy to do at first. Many times people presenting will start off strong looking at the audience then get locked into reading off the paper. Good effort though and the only way to improve is practice and experience.
i cant look upp...
when ever i have like a paper in front of me
i look down the whole time and its really hard to look up because there right in front of you so its like whats the point in not reading it.
and then i have a tendensy to talk really fast so when i get up there and i'm nervouse i talk even faster than normal so really like you cant understand me... i'm trying to work on it but its a bad habit thats hard to breakplus i say like alot so thats another reason i write it out so i dont say like - and i know whats next so i dont say umm either
i thought it was a lot harder to do the oral presentation. i was so scared about forgeting to look at everyone, that i never actually looked at my paper. i thought oral presentations would be easier because you couldn't make gramatical mistakes. i think it turned out to be harder. i know i said "ummmm" a lot, but it is really hard not to. i'm trying to fix it but it's difficult.

I think they were fun tho because you can tell everyone everything.
things are so much more interesting when they're told rather then when you have to read it to yourself. I was really nervouse... but then once i got up there i was a little better. and when i was finshed i just wanted to do it again =] I liked wathcing other people so you can see what they'r doing wrong so oyu can fix it when you get up there and not make the same mistakes.
i had no probelm looking up because i took the whole weekend memizoning the words also i made sur that i was prononseing the words right. The most hard thing that i had was that i get very nerves and i cant relax. Then i started to rush to try to finsh. im very glad that mr howman did the tongue twisters to see how relax and fun it can be if you realy try to present something.
see ya at school,
wexler
PS i hope theres no school on monday
i like doing written current events better because it makes you less nervous and if you write it, then you can slowly take your time and write it out better, where as if you speak it, you tend to rush and mess up and you cant always go back. plus i think you can get a better grade doing it written.
so, i do like the written current events much better and i think we should continue to do those instead.
Wow I hated that a lot. It's so much easier to do it on paper, because you can backspace and change everything. I also hate that we have to make eye contact- it makes you feel so stupid. I had my whole thing memorized, but i didn't want to look up the whole time because it was madd embarassing. I hope we dn't have to do them again haha.
I honestly liked the Oral presentation better because you can ad items if you need to, and you dont need to write down all the info, but if all the items you want to talk about aren't on the paper it makes it harder to get thoughts together quikly.
current events are easy but the oral presentation is hard...
I think that you can be good at anything with practice and thats why your doing this right Mr H? To get us ready for a high school and stuff...
I think we should defidentaly get to decide
if we had a chice between the oral and the written I would choose written but something different can be a good thing to I think
they were funnn
it was like evry one was nervouse and then they were all likke i wanna do it againn!!
they alot funner than the written because sometimes you get sick of writting . its a good change. It also fun just to not have to worry about anything in the class you can just sit and watch people and see what they're doing wrong so you dont make the same mistakes...
i have a problem looking up to. i always forget to look up. never want to look up from the notes because i don't want to see people that are not paying attention. does that make any sense? i dunno. but hopefully u catch what i'm saying
I like the written c.e. SOO much more than the oral presentation. I dont like people(no offense) and having them stare at you while you talk is torture. when you write, you can easily go back and revise and add information in. when you write, you dont have to worry about saying um and anddddddd or make eye contact. also, im not the smoothest talker, i tend to talk really really fast and dont pronounce the words correctly. its especially hard if you are not a big fan of people and ur topic isnt the most interesting
yeah...

In the begining I felt that the oral was a lot more pressure, there was more things to worry about. When I was at home I practiced and read my current events over and over again. I got a better grade on the oral presentation. (except for my connection~which I understand the fact that my connection was not discribed very well.)

Hay Mr. Howman I think that the oral reports are so fun because it really challenges you to work on public speaking!!!
P.S.
Congrats on the new baby:)

Hi Mr. H, It's Maggie u know from 7th grade. I think this whole blog thing is really cool!! Why didn't u have it last year!! I just thought i would say hi, and why i am on the subject i sometimes have a hard time doing oral presentations and i prefer written stuff. But i guess we need the practice for future stuff like high school.
Nice to say hi!
Maggie
i think that the oral presentation is easier to do when you think about it, but when you acctauly get behind the podiam its a little difficult to start off but then when you get the hang of it you kinda just go with the flow, the tough part of presentating is eye contact its difficult to keep your eyes on the audience another thing thats hard is remmember what you have to say.like when i read it all night i thought it wass gunna be easy but when i get up there i have i forget most of what i studied to read the night before and read more off of the paper. but im working on it.
: D
i think the s.s. Rome projects are a good way to help us practice for high school.
i thouhgt that the rome presentations were harder than the current events because i felt more preasure that it was a bigger grade. but it made me feel better that people were looking at my poster bord rather than me incase i mess up or somthing people would notice less because there was something else to look at.
Mr. Howman,
when did you say the next current events are due?
I think that Current Event Talks are Much Harder Than The Regular Written Current Event's. I Have to Say That The Written Current Event's Are Better For The People Who Don't Like To Go Up In Front Of Alot Of People. But, The People Who Love To Go Up And Talk In Front Of Everyone. Also, The Current Event Talks Have Their Advantages, Which Are That They Are Over Within 4 To 5 Minutes. And You Get Better Grades On Them. Then, Having People Look At You The Whole Time While You Are Talking Might Be Uncomforable For Some People. But, The Written Current Events, Are Harder To Grade Because Mr. Howman Has More Time To Look At The Mistakes/Errors Which Give Us The Lower The Grade The More Errors. Therefore, The Current Event Talks Are Both Good And Bad For Different Types Of People. So, I Believe You Should Be Able Choose Whether Or Not You Do A Written Current Event, Or A Current Event Talk.
:) :)
